Studies on Liver Regeneration in Partially Hepateetomized Rats

Abstract
The livers of rats were damaged with carbon tetrachloride and¢¥ prednisolone, or with ^(137)Cs-irradiation, and then partially removed. The liver regeneration was assessed histologically and by measuring the changes in weight of the residual liver.
1. The liver weight after partial hepatectomy in normal rats (hepatectomized controls) increased 2-fold in 2 days, and restored to the pre-hepatectomy levels in- 7 days.
2. The liver of CC14-treated rats showed the deposition of fine fat droplets, focal necrosis and a mild infiltration of inflammatory cells. The liver weight after hepatectomy increased much less than the hepatectomized controls in 2 days, and did not restored to the pre-hepatectomy levels even in 14 days.
3. The liver of prednisolone-treated rats showed loss of the lobular architecture due to diffuse swelling of parenchymal cells and narrowing of the sdnuscids. The liver weight after hepatectomy increased as much as those of the hepatectomized controls in 2 days, yet after 7 days less than the controls.
4. The liver of the ^(137)Cs-irradiated rats showed a mild necrosis and severe hydropic changes in subcapsular area with little change in the deeper zone. The liver regeneration after hepatectomy was more active than the hepateoto mized controls in 2 day-period, but less active after 7 days. However, the regenerative rate was greater than in CC14-or prednisolone-treated groups.
